译文

By this a man gains great fame in this world and escapes suffering and misfortune. People never desire as their lord one whose favor is fruitless and whose anger passes without effect, just as women never desire a eunuch for a husband. Intelligence is not there merely for the acquisition of wealth, nor is idleness the cause of misfortune; only the wise man, and no other, knows the reason for the diversity of conditions in this world. A fool, O Bharata, always disregards those advanced in years, outstanding in conduct and knowledge, intellect, wealth, and lineage. Misfortunes soon overtake those of evil character, devoid of wisdom, envious or sinful, foul of speech and irascible. Freedom from deceit, generosity, adherence to established terms of dealing, and speech well under control subdue all beings. He who is not given to lying, who is active, grateful, intelligent, and guileless, obtains friends, counselors, and servants even though his treasury is empty.
