Dhritarashtra said: 'Excellent, O Sanatsujata, is this discourse of yours on the attainment of Brahman and the origin of the universe. I beg you, O illustrious Rishi, to continue speaking to me such words as are unconnected with the objects of worldly desire and therefore rare among men.' Sanatsujata said: 'That Brahman about which you ask me with such delight will not be attained quickly. Once the will has dissolved into pure intellect, a state of complete freedom from worldly thought is reached. Even this is knowledge (leading to the attainment of Brahman). It is attainable only through the practice of Brahmacharya.' Dhritarashtra said: 'You say that the knowledge of Brahman dwells of itself in the mind, revealed only through Brahmacharya — that is, abiding in the mind, it requires no effort for its manifestation (such as is needed for ordinary work), manifesting of itself in the course of the search (through Brahmacharya). How then is immortality connected with the attainment of Brahman?' Sanatsujata said: 'Although the knowledge of Brahman dwells in the mind and is an inseparable part of it, it is still unmanifest. This knowledge is manifested through pure intellect and Brahmacharya. Indeed, having attained this knowledge, yogins depart from this world. It can always be found among eminent teachers. Now I shall tell you of this knowledge.' Dhritarashtra said: 'What must be the nature of that Brahmacharya by which the knowledge of Brahman can be attained without great difficulty?'

This passage (5.44.1–5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace already unfolds against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key themes: Dhritarashtra. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
