Righteousness, truthfulness, asceticism, self-restraint, contentment, modesty, renunciation, love for others, giving, familiarity with the scriptures, patience, and forgiveness — these twelve are the practices of the brāhmaṇa. He who does not fall away from these twelve is able to shake the whole earth. He who is endowed with three, two, or even one of them never counts anything as his own to the exclusion of others. Self-restraint, renunciation, and knowledge — in these lies liberation. These are the qualities of brāhmaṇas endowed with wisdom, who hold Brahman to be the highest of all objects to be attained. Whether it be true or false, it is not praiseworthy for a brāhmaṇa to speak ill of others; those who do so have hell for their dwelling. Mada has eighteen faults, which I have not yet enumerated.

This passage (5.45.6–10) carries forward the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds already against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key themes: Vidura. Dharma here reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through fidelity to one's word, and through the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
