Vaishampayana said: 'Thus addressed, Vasudeva -- ever wrathful Bhima, unable to bear insult, awoke at once like a horse of the finest steel, and answered without losing an instant, saying: "O Achyuta, I wish to act in a particular way, yet you perceive me in an altogether different light. That I take the keenest delight in war, and that my valor cannot be shaken, ought, O Krishna, to be well known to you, since we have long lived together. Or perhaps you do not know me, as a man swimming in a lake does not know its depth. It is for this that you reproach me with such unbecoming words. Who else, O Madhava, knowing that I am Bhimasena, could address me with words as unfitting as yours?"'

This passage (5.76.1-5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key themes: Dhritarashtra. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
