Dhritarashtra said: 'O Vidura, Janardana has set out from Upaplavya. He has now halted at Vrikasthala and will arrive here tomorrow. Janardana is the leader of the Ahukas, foremost among all of the Sattvata race, magnanimous, endowed with great energy and great strength. Indeed, Madhava is the guardian and protector of the flourishing kingdom of the Vrishnis and the illustrious forefather of the three worlds; the Vrishnis defer to the wisdom of the sagacious Krishna just as the Adityas, the Vasus, and the Rudras defer to the wisdom of Brihaspati.'

The passage 5.86.1-5 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key themes: Krishna, Duryodhana, Vidura. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the kings' responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
