译文

"And if scorn should touch you, I will abandon you forever. When the time comes, even life, dear as it is, must be given up." O best of men, you must also say to the sons of Madri, who are ever devoted to the ways of the kshatriyas: "Strive to win the objects of enjoyment gained by valor more than life itself, for only objects won by valor can gladden the heart of one who wishes to live by the ways of the kshatriyas." Setting out there, O mighty-armed one, say to the best of all wielders of weapons, Arjuna, the heroic son of Pandu: "Follow the path that Draupadi may point out to you." You know, O Keshava, that when angered, Bhima and Arjuna, each of whom is like the Universal Destroyer, could slay even the gods themselves. That Duhshasana and Karna, and Duryodhana himself, insulted mighty Bhima with such degrading words in the presence of the Kuru chiefs — of this I am certain he will reap the fruit, for Vrikodara, provoked by the enemy, knows no rest. That did not grieve me; the defeat at dice did not grieve me. That the renowned and beautiful princess of Panchala was dragged into the assembly clad in a single garment and made to hear bitter words grieved me most of all. She had no one, O slayer of Madhu — yet having you, foremost of all mighty men, and Rama, and that mighty car-warrior Pradyumna as protectors of myself and my children, and having, O best of men, my sons, unconquerable Bhima and unyielding Vijaya, both alive — that I still had to bear such grief is indeed strange! Vaishampayana continued: "Thus addressed by Shauri, the friend of Partha, he then consoled his paternal aunt Pritha, who was overcome with grief for her sons. And Vasudeva said: 'What woman on earth is there like you, O aunt? Daughter of the king of Shurasena, you were admitted by marriage into the line of Ajamidha. Nobly born and nobly wedded, you are like a lotus transplanted from one mighty lake to another. Possessed of all prosperity and great fortune, you were cherished by your husband. Wife of a hero, you have again given birth to heroic sons. Possessed of every virtue and endowed with great wisdom, you must bear both happiness and sorrow with patience. Overcoming sleep and languor, anger and joy, hunger and thirst, cold and heat, your children ever dwell in the enjoyment of that happiness which, as heroes, is rightfully theirs. Endowed with great diligence and great strength, your sons, untouched by the comforts that satisfy only the low and the middling, ever strive for that happiness which, as heroes, should be theirs.'"
