जनमेजय उवाच
अनर्थे जातनिर्बन्धं परार्थे लोभमोहितम् ॥
अनार्यकेष्व् अभिरतं मरणे कृतनिश्चयम् ॥
ज्ञातीनां दुःखकर्तारं बन्धूनां शोकवर्धनम् ॥
सुहृदां क्लेशदातारं द्विषतां हर्षवर्धनम् ॥
कथं नैनं विमार्गस्थं वारयन्तीह बान्धवाः ॥
सौहृदाद् वा सुहृत्स्निग्धो भगवान् वा पितामहः ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
उक्तं भगवता वाक्यम् उक्तं भीष्मेण यत् क्षमम् ॥
उक्तं बहुविधं चैव नारदेनापि तच् छृणु ॥
नारद उवाच
दुर्लभो वै सुहृच् छ्रोता दुर्लभश् च हितः सुहृत् ॥
तिष्ठते हि सुहृद् यत्र न बन्धुस् तत्र तिष्ठति ॥
janamejaya uvāca
anarthe jātanirbandhaṃ parārthe lobhamohitam ||
anāryakeṣv abhirataṃ maraṇe kṛtaniścayam ||
jñātīnāṃ duḥkhakartāraṃ bandhūnāṃ śokavardhanam ||
suhṛdāṃ kleśadātāraṃ dviṣatāṃ harṣavardhanam ||
kathaṃ nainaṃ vimārgasthaṃ vārayantīha bāndhavāḥ ||
sauhṛdād vā suhṛtsnigdho bhagavān vā pitāmahaḥ ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
uktaṃ bhagavatā vākyam uktaṃ bhīṣmeṇa yat kṣamam ||
uktaṃ bahuvidhaṃ caiva nāradenāpi tac chṛṇu ||
nārada uvāca
durlabho vai suhṛc chrotā durlabhaś ca hitaḥ suhṛt ||
tiṣṭhate hi suhṛd yatra na bandhus tatra tiṣṭhati ||
Then Narada said: "This is the charioteer named Matali. Moreover, he is a dear friend of Shakra. Pure in conduct, he possesses an excellent character and a multitude of virtues. Endowed with strength of spirit, he has great energy and great might. He is the friend, counselor, and driver of Shakra. In every battle it could be seen how small the difference was between him and Vasava in valor and power. In all the battles between the gods and the asuras, it is this very Matali who, by intellect alone, guides the ever-victorious and finest of Indra's chariots, yoked with a thousand horses. Overcome by his handling of the steeds, the enemies of the gods submit to Vasava through his hands. Overcome beforehand by Matali, the asuras are afterward slain by Indra."
