Vaishampayana said: “Then Dashārha, smiling, his eyes agitated with anger, said to Duryodhana in the assembly of the Kurus: ‘You shall have the heroes' bed; as you have wished, so shall you obtain it. Stand firm together with your counselors: a great clash will come. And as for your thinking, fool that you are, “I have committed no offense against the Pandavas” — hear all of this, O lords of men. Tormented by the glory of the great-souled Pandavas, you and Saubala, O Bharata, wickedly devised the game of dice. How could kinsmen who surpass you and are approved by the good be so unjustly brought into subjection by a crooked man, when they themselves walk the straight path?’”

Krishna lays out before Duryodhana the concrete chain of his guilt: the game of dice, the humiliation of Draupadi, the attempts to kill the Pandavas, and the rejection of the elders' peaceful counsel. He then proposes a harsh political measure: for the sake of saving the family and the kshatriyas, bind the chief culprits, for dharma sometimes requires cutting off one destroyer so that the whole is not lost.
