Bhishma said: Shakuni, that maternal uncle of yours, O lord of men, is a single ratha; having provoked hostility with the Pandavas, he will fight — of this there is no doubt. His troops are hard to overcome in battle, they do not retreat, are armed for the most part with strange weapons, and equal the wind in swiftness. The son of Drona, a great archer, surpasses all bowmen; in battle he is skilled in varied combat, firm in the use of weapons, and is a maharatha. His arrows, O great king, loosed from the bow, fly in an unbroken stream, like the arrows from the Gandiva. I am unable to reckon this hero, the best of charioteers: should he wish it, this man of great renown could burn up even the three worlds.

Bhishma goes on to weigh not only the warriors' strength but the limits of that strength. Ashvatthaman is nearly boundless in weaponry, yet his attachment to life makes any reckoning of him uncertain; Drona is capable of destroying entire armies, yet his love for Arjuna restrains his hand. In this way the roster of ratha warriors becomes not a dry military ledger but a map of inner knots: valor, attachment, old pacts, past enmity, and personal debts all enter the battle together with the weapons.
