"Ashvatthaman, the son of Shantanu, Saindhava Jayadratha, the charioteers of the south, west and mountains, Shakuni the king of Gandhara, the peoples of the east and north from every side, the Shakas, Kiratas, Yavanas, Shibis and Vasatis -- all of them, with their own troops, surrounded the great charioteer. These great charioteers marched out in the second division. Kritavarman with his forces, the mighty Trigartas, King Duryodhana surrounded by his brothers, Shala, Bhurishravas, Shalya, Kausalya and Brihadbala moved behind, led by the son of Dhritarashtra."

This chapter shows the material side of war: not only heroes and vows, but the vast organization of camps, rites, provisions and retinue. The Kaurava army moves like an entire city on the march: kings, peoples, artisans, singers, merchants and onlookers all enter the space of war. Duryodhana attends to order and provisioning, yet this very abundance of outward show underscores the scale of the catastrophe now approaching. Before the battle, dharma is already being tested -- not only on the field, but in how a ruler governs people, resources and allies.
