"These great charioteers, ready for battle, marched by an even road and, clad in armor, took up their positions on the western side of Kurukshetra. Duryodhana, O Bharata, had a camp built that was adorned like a second Hastinapura. Even skilled men, the city's own inhabitants, O king, could not tell whether it was a city or a camp. Such fortifications, O Kaurava, the lord of the earth had built for the kings as well, by the hundreds and thousands. Leaving five yojanas around the battlefield, the encampments, O king, occupied the space in their hundreds of clusters."

This chapter shows the material side of war: not only heroes and vows, but the vast organization of camps, rites, provisions and retinue. The Kaurava army moves like an entire city on the march: kings, peoples, artisans, singers, merchants and onlookers all enter the space of war. Duryodhana attends to order and provisioning, yet this very abundance of outward show underscores the scale of the catastrophe now approaching. Before the battle, dharma is already being tested -- not only on the field, but in how a ruler governs people, resources and allies.
