श्रीभगवान् उवाच
कुतस् त्वा कश्मलम् इदं विषमे समुपस्थितम् ॥
अनार्यजुष्टम् अस्वर्ग्यम् अकीर्तिकरम् अर्जुन ॥
क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत् त्वय्य् उपपद्यते ॥
क्षुद्रं हृदयदौर्बल्यं त्यक्त्वोत्तिष्ठ परंतप ॥
śrībhagavān uvāca
kutas tvā kaśmalam idaṃ viṣame samupasthitam ||
anāryajuṣṭam asvargyam akīrtikaram arjuna ||
klaibyaṃ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitat tvayy upapadyate ||
kṣudraṃ hṛdayadaurbalyaṃ tyaktvottiṣṭha paraṃtapa ||
Shri Bhagavan said: "Whence has this delusion come upon you at this perilous hour, O Arjuna? It is unworthy of the noble, does not lead to heaven, and brings disgrace. Do not give way to faintheartedness, son of Pritha: this does not become you. Cast off this base weakness of heart and arise, O scorcher of foes."

Krishna begins with a sharp awakening. He does not reject compassion as such, but shows that in Arjuna it has become mixed with kashmala — a delusion that strips him of the ability to act according to dharma.
