Sanjaya said: ‘When that elephant army had been destroyed, your son Duryodhana urged on all the armies with the words: “Kill Bhimasena!” Then, by your son’s command, all the ranks rushed upon Bhimasena, who was uttering terrible cries. That boundless flood of troops, unbearable even for the gods, surged forward, hard to overcome, like the ocean at the tide: thick with chariots, elephants, and horses, resounding with conches and dundubhis, endless and boundless, with a still deep of motionless kings. But Bhimasena in battle halted this unshakable sea of army, as the shore halts another great ocean. We beheld in that battle a wondrous deed, credible yet astonishing, a superhuman feat of Bhimasena, O king. Without confusion he beat with his mace the whole upheaved earth together with its horses, chariots, and elephants. Having checked these floods of troops with his mace, Bhima, the best of chariot-warriors, stood motionless amid the tumult of battle, like Mount Meru.’

Duryodhana again tries to resolve his fear through command: all the armies must fall upon Bhima alone. But Bhima becomes the shore against which the Kuru ocean of war breaks; force without a righteous foundation meets an unmoving resolve.
