भयं मे सुमहज् जातं विस्मयश् चैव संजय ॥
श्रुत्वा पाण्डुकुमाराणां कर्म देवैः सुदुष्करम् ॥
पुत्राणां च पराभवं श्रुत्वा संजय सर्वशः ॥
चिन्ता मे महती सूत भविष्यति कथं त्व् इति ॥
ध्रुवं विदुरवाक्यानि धक्ष्यन्ति हृदयं मम ॥
यथा हि दृश्यते सर्वं दैवयोगेन संजय ॥
यत्र भीष्ममुखाञ् शूरान् अस्त्रज्ञान् योधसत्तमान् ॥
पाण्डवानाम् अनीकानि योधयन्ति प्रहारिणः ॥
केनावध्या महात्मानः पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः ॥
केन दत्तवरास् तात किं वा ज्ञानं विदन्ति ते ॥
येन क्षयं न गच्छन्ति दिवि तारागणा इव ॥
पुनः पुनर् न मृष्यामि हतं सैन्यं स्म पाण्डवैः ॥
मय्य् एव दण्डः पतति दैवात् परमदारुणः ॥
यथावध्याः पाण्डुसुता यथा वध्याश् च मे सुताः ॥
एतन् मे सर्वम् आचक्ष्व यथातत्त्वेन संजय ॥
न हि पारं प्रपश्यामि दुःखस्यास्य कथं चन ॥
समुद्रस्येव महतो भुजाभ्यां प्रतरन् नरः ॥
पुत्राणां व्यसनं मन्ये ध्रुवं प्राप्तं सुदारुणम् ॥
घातयिष्यति मे पुत्रान् सर्वान् भीमो न संशयः ॥
न हि पश्यामि तं वीरं यो मे रक्षेत् सुतान् रणे ॥
ध्रुवं विनाशः समरे पुत्राणां मम संजय ॥
तस्मान् मे कारणं सूत युक्तिं चैव विशेषतः ॥
पृच्छतो ऽद्य यथातत्त्वं सर्वम् आख्यातुम् अर्हसि ॥
दुर्योधनो ऽपि यच् चक्रे दृष्ट्वा स्वान् विमुखान् रणे ॥
भीष्मद्रोणौ कृपश् चैव सौबलेयो जयद्रथः ॥
द्रौणिर् वापि महेष्वासो विकर्णो वा महाबलः ॥
निश्चयो वापि कस् तेषां तदा ह्य् आसीन् महात्मनाम् ॥
विमुखेषु महाप्राज्ञ मम पुत्रेषु संजय ॥

pāṇḍavānām anīkāni yodhayanti prahāriṇaḥ ||
kenāvadhyā mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍuputrā mahābalāḥ ||
kena dattavarās tāta kiṃ vā jñānaṃ vidanti te ||
yena kṣayaṃ na gacchanti divi tārāgaṇā iva ||
punaḥ punar na mṛṣyāmi hataṃ sainyaṃ sma pāṇḍavaiḥ ||
mayy eva daṇḍaḥ patati daivāt paramadāruṇaḥ ||
yathāvadhyāḥ pāṇḍusutā yathā vadhyāś ca me sutāḥ ||
etan me sarvam ācakṣva yathātattvena saṃjaya ||
na hi pāraṃ prapaśyāmi duḥkhasyāsya kathaṃ cana ||
samudrasyeva mahato bhujābhyāṃ prataran naraḥ ||
putrāṇāṃ vyasanaṃ manye dhruvaṃ prāptaṃ sudāruṇam ||
ghātayiṣyati me putrān sarvān bhīmo na saṃśayaḥ ||
na hi paśyāmi taṃ vīraṃ yo me rakṣet sutān raṇe ||
dhruvaṃ vināśaḥ samare putrāṇāṃ mama saṃjaya ||
tasmān me kāraṇaṃ sūta yuktiṃ caiva viśeṣataḥ ||
pṛcchato 'dya yathātattvaṃ sarvam ākhyātum arhasi ||
duryodhano 'pi yac cakre dṛṣṭvā svān vimukhān raṇe ||
bhīṣmadroṇau kṛpaś caiva saubaleyo jayadrathaḥ ||
drauṇir vāpi maheṣvāso vikarṇo vā mahābalaḥ ||
niścayo vāpi kas teṣāṃ tadā hy āsīn mahātmanām ||
vimukheṣu mahāprājña mama putreṣu saṃjaya ||
Dhritarashtra said: 'A great fear has arisen in me, and with it astonishment, O Sanjaya, on hearing of the deed of the sons of Pandu — a feat hard even for the gods — and of the utter defeat of my sons. Great is my anxiety, O Suta: what will happen now? Surely Vidura's words will burn my heart, for everything, O Sanjaya, now appears as the working of fate. There, where the armies of the Pandavas make the heroes led by Bhishma — knowers of weapons and the finest of warriors — fight on, by what are these great-souled and mighty sons of Pandu invulnerable? By whom has a boon been granted to them, my son? What knowledge do they possess, that they do not perish like the hosts of stars in the sky? Again and again I cannot bear that my army has been destroyed by the Pandavas; upon me alone falls the most dreadful blow of fate. Tell me all of this truly, Sanjaya: why are the sons of Pandu invulnerable, and why are my sons doomed? I see no shore to this sorrow, like a man trying to swim across a great ocean with his arms alone. I think a terrible calamity has already overtaken my sons: Bhima will surely destroy them all. I see no hero who could protect my sons in battle; their destruction in war is certain, Sanjaya. Therefore, Suta, you must relate to me in full and in truth, since I ask you, the cause and the course of events: what did Duryodhana do on seeing his own men turned back in battle, and what resolve did Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, the son of Subala, Jayadratha, the great archer Drauni, or the mighty Vikarna have then, when my sons wavered, O wise Sanjaya?'
