'You are the all-abode, the universal form, the Lord of the universe; You are Vishvaksena, the all-maker and self-controlled one. Therefore I take refuge in You, Vasudeva, Lord of the universe, the deity whose very nature is yoga. Victory to You, universal great God; victory to You, who delight in the world's welfare; victory to You, lord of the yogis, all-mighty; victory to You, source of both the highest and the lowest in yoga. O lotus-wombed, wide-eyed one, victory to the Lord of the lords of the world; O Lord of the past, the future and the present, victory to You, born in the lunar line. O unconquerable one of innumerable qualities, victory to the universal refuge; O Narayana, hard to traverse, victory to the wielder of the Sharnga bow. O one endowed with all secret virtues, universal form, flawless; O Lord of the universe, mighty-armed, victory to You, devoted to the world's good. O one who assumes the forms of the great serpent, the Boar, and others, O Harikesha, mighty one, victory to You; O abode of Hari, lord of men, dwelling of the universe, immeasurable and imperishable. O foundation of the manifest and the unmanifest, O controller of the senses who yet possesses them, knower of the innumerable states of souls, victory to You, profound giver of desires. O infinite one, whose wisdom is known, eternal manifester of beings; O one who has accomplished his task, perfected in wisdom, knower of dharma, victorious and unconquerable. O secret Self, Self of all beings, source of manifestly arisen existence; O essence of the meaning of beings, Lord of the world, victory to You, manifester of beings. O self-born, most fortunate one, devoted to the contraction of the kalpa; O one who manifests and who arises in the mind, victory to You, beloved of Brahma. O one who delights in natural creation, Lord of desire, Supreme Lord; O source arisen from nectar, true being, fire of the age, giver of victory. O Lord of Prajapati, O God, Padmanabha, of great strength; O self-existent one, great being, Self of action, victory to You, giver of the fruits of action.'

The hymn of Brahma joins cosmic, personal, and avatar names together. Vasudeva here is not part of the world, nor one god among others within its structure: He is the foundation of the manifest and the unmanifest, the Self of all beings, and the wielder of Sharnga's bow who then acts within history alongside the Pandavas.
