Sanjaya said: 'Seeing his brothers and the other kings locked in combat with Bhishma, Dhananjaya, weapon raised, rushed at the son of Ganga. When we saw Partha's banner and heard the roar of the Panchajanya and the bow Gandiva, fear entered all of us. We saw, O great king, the divine, many-colored and variegated banner of the wielder of Gandiva, marked with the image of a monkey: like a comet risen up, it did not catch on the trees. The warriors saw upon the great chariot the gold-backed Gandiva, gleaming in the sky like lightning amid a cloud. We clearly heard the terrible sound of his palms, as he, like the roaring Indra, struck your army. Like a storm-cloud driven by fierce wind, with lightning and thunder, Dhananjaya, armed with fearsome weapons, rushed at the son of Ganga, flooding every direction with showers of arrows. Bewildered by the weapons, we no longer knew east from west. Confused, their feathers spent, disarmed and their minds undone, your warriors, O bull of the Bharatas, clinging to one another, together with all your sons, took refuge in Bhishma alone. In that battle Bhishma, son of Shantanu, became their sole refuge. Then the frightened charioteers leapt from their chariots, the riders from the backs of their horses, and the foot soldiers from the ground. Hearing the roar of the Gandiva, like the crash of a thunderbolt, all the armies, seized with fear, fell back, O Bharata.'

The appearance of Arjuna is described not as a single blow but as an event that shifts the state of the whole army: the sound of the Panchajanya, of the Gandiva, and Hanuman's banner strike fear even before direct combat begins. For a moment Bhishma alone becomes the sole refuge of the Kauravas.
