विरथा रथिनश् चात्र निस्त्रिंशवरधारिणः ॥
अन्योन्यम् अभिधावन्त परस्परवधैषिणः ॥
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा कलिङ्गैर् बहुभिर् वृतः ॥
पुरस्कृत्य रणे भीष्मं पाण्डवान् अभ्यवर्तत ॥
तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे परिवार्य वृकोदरम् ॥
भीष्मम् अभ्यद्रवन् क्रुद्धा रणे रभसवाहनाः ॥
virathā rathinaś cātra nistriṃśavaradhāriṇaḥ ||
anyonyam abhidhāvanta parasparavadhaiṣiṇaḥ ||
tato duryodhano rājā kaliṅgair bahubhir vṛtaḥ ||
puraskṛtya raṇe bhīṣmaṃ pāṇḍavān abhyavartata ||
tathaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve parivārya vṛkodaram ||
bhīṣmam abhyadravan kruddhā raṇe rabhasavāhanāḥ ||
Here both the dismounted chariot-warriors and those still on their chariots, bearing the finest swords, ran at one another, seeking each other's death. Then King Duryodhana, surrounded by many Kalingas, placed Bhishma before him in battle and advanced upon the Pandavas. So too all the Pandavas, surrounding Vrikodara, enraged, with their swift mounts, rushed into battle against Bhishma."

The chapter closes with a fresh convergence of two centers: Duryodhana sets Bhishma in front, and the Pandavas gather around Bhima. Both sides mass their strength around those meant to break through the enemy's ranks.
