प्रादुश्चक्रे महामायां घोररूपां सुदारुणाम् ॥
मोहयन् समरे द्रौणिं मायावी राक्षसाधिपः ॥
ततस् ते तावकाः सर्वे मायया विमुखीकृताः ॥
अन्योन्यं समपश्यन्त निकृत्तान् मेदिनीतले ॥
विचेष्टमानान् कृपणाञ् शोणितेन समुक्षितान् ॥
द्रोणं दुर्योधनं शल्यम् अश्वत्थामानम् एव च ॥
प्रायशश् च महेष्वासा ये प्रधानाश् च कौरवाः ॥
विध्वस्ता रथिनः सर्वे गजाश् च विनिपातिताः ॥
हयाश् च सहयारोहा विनिकृत्ताः सहस्रशः ॥
तद् दृष्ट्वा तावकं सैन्यं विद्रुतं शिबिरं प्रति ॥
मम प्राक्रोशतो राजंस् तथा देवव्रतस्य च ॥
युध्यध्वं मा पलायध्वं मायैषा राक्षसी रणे ॥
घटोत्कचप्रयुक्तेति नातिष्ठन्त विमोहिताः ॥
नैव ते श्रद्दधुर् भीता वदतोर् आवयोर् वचः ॥
तांश् च प्रद्रवतो दृष्ट्वा जयं प्राप्ताश् च पाण्डवाः ॥
घटोत्कचेन सहिताः सिंहनादान् प्रचक्रिरे ॥
शङ्खदुन्दुभिघोषाश् च समन्तात् सस्वनुर् भृशम् ॥
एवं तव बलं सर्वं हैडिम्बेन दुरात्मना ॥
सूर्यास्तमनवेलायां प्रभग्नं विद्रुतं दिशः ॥

yudhyadhvaṃ mā palāyadhvaṃ māyaiṣā rākṣasī raṇe ||
ghaṭotkacaprayukteti nātiṣṭhanta vimohitāḥ ||
naiva te śraddadhur bhītā vadator āvayor vacaḥ ||
tāṃś ca pradravato dṛṣṭvā jayaṃ prāptāś ca pāṇḍavāḥ ||
ghaṭotkacena sahitāḥ siṃhanādān pracakrire ||
śaṅkhadundubhighoṣāś ca samantāt sasvanur bhṛśam ||
evaṃ tava balaṃ sarvaṃ haiḍimbena durātmanā ||
sūryāstamanavelāyāṃ prabhagnaṃ vidrutaṃ diśaḥ ||
Then the lord of the rakshasas, the sorcerer Ghatotkacha, manifested a great illusion, terrible and utterly dreadful, casting Ashvatthaman into confusion in the battle. Thereupon all your warriors, turned back by the sorcery, began to see one another as if hacked to pieces on the ground, writhing pitifully and drenched in blood. They seemed to see Drona, Duryodhana, Shalya, Ashvatthaman himself, and nearly all the chief great bowmen of the Kauravas; all the chariot-warriors appeared shattered, the elephants brought down, and the horses together with their riders cut to pieces by the thousand. Seeing this, your army fled toward the camp, even though I cried out, O king, and Devavrata too: 'Fight, do not flee! This is a rakshasa illusion in the battle, wrought by Ghatotkacha!' But they, deluded, could not hold their ground, and in their fear did not believe the words of us both. Seeing them fleeing, the Pandavas, having won the victory, together with Ghatotkacha, let out lion-roars. On every side conches and drums resounded loudly. Thus, O king, at the hour of sunset, your whole army was shattered by Haidimba and scattered in every direction.
