घोराश् च घोरनिर्ह्रादाः शिवास् तत्र ववाशिरे ॥
वेदयन्त्यो महाराज महद् वैशसम् आगतम् ॥
दिशः प्रज्वलिता राजन् पांसुवर्षं पपात च ॥
रुधिरेण समुन्मिश्रम् अस्थिवर्षं तथैव च ॥
रुदतां वाहनानां च नेत्रेभ्यः प्रापतज् जलम् ॥
सुस्रुवुश् च शकृन्मूत्रं प्रध्यायन्तो विशां पते ॥
अन्तर्हिता महानादाः श्रूयन्ते भरतर्षभ ॥
रक्षसां पुरुषादानां नदतां भैरवान् रवान् ॥
संपतन्तः स्म दृश्यन्ते गोमायुबकवायसाः ॥
श्वानश् च विविधैर् नादैर् भषन्तस् तत्र तस्थिरे ॥
ज्वलिताश् च महोल्का वै समाहत्य दिवाकरम् ॥
निपेतुः सहसा भूमौ वेदयाना महद् भयम् ॥
महान्त्य् अनीकानि महासमुच्छ्रये; समागमे पाण्डवधार्तराष्ट्रयोः ॥

mahānty anīkāni mahāsamucchraye; samāgame pāṇḍavadhārtarāṣṭrayoḥ ||
prakāśire śaṅkhamṛdaṅganisvanaiḥ; prakampitānīva vanāni vāyunā ||
narendranāgāśvasamākulānām; abhyāyatīnām aśive muhūrte ||
babhūva ghoṣas tumulaś camūnāṃ; vātoddhutānām iva sāgarāṇām ||
Birds, shrieking terrible cries, flew wildly about; the risen, radiant sun lost its brilliance. Tumultuous winds arose, foretelling great danger, and dreadful, terrible-voiced jackals howled there, announcing, great king, the vast slaughter to come. The quarters of the sky seemed to blaze, O king; a rain of dust fell, mingled with blood, and a rain of bones as well. From the eyes of the weeping draft animals tears streamed, and, downcast, they discharged dung and urine, O lord of subjects. Hidden, loud voices of man-eating rakshasas were heard, O bull of the Bharatas, uttering fearsome screams. Jackals, herons, and crows were seen flocking together, and dogs stood there barking with various voices. Blazing great meteors, as though striking the sun, fell suddenly to the ground, foretelling a great danger. The great armies of the Pandavas and the sons of Dhritarashtra, having met in their lofty arrays, stood out with the din of conches and mridangas, like forests shaken by the wind. Among the forces, thronged with kings, elephants, and horses, advancing at an ill-omened hour, there arose a tumultuous roar, as of oceans whipped up by the wind.
