स संधाय शरांस् तीक्ष्णान् कर्मारपरिमार्जितान् ॥
भीमं विव्याध सप्तत्या तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥
कृपश् च कृतवर्मा च भगदत्तश् च मारिष ॥
विन्दानुविन्दाव् आवन्त्यौ चित्रसेनश् च संयुगे ॥
दुर्मर्षणो विकर्णश् च सिन्धुराजश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
भीमं ते विव्यधुस् तूर्णं शल्यहेतोर् अरिंदमाः ॥
स तु तान् प्रतिविव्याध पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिः शरैः ॥

आजघान भ्रुवोर् मध्ये नाराचेन परंतप ॥
भीमस् तु समरे विद्ध्वा शल्यं नवभिर् आयसैः ॥
भगदत्तं त्रिभिश् चैव कृतवर्माणम् अष्टभिः ॥
द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यां च विव्याध गौतमप्रभृतीन् रथान् ॥
ते तु तं समरे राजन् विव्यधुर् निशितैः शरैः ॥
स तथा पीड्यमानो ऽपि सर्वतस् तैर् महारथैः ॥
मत्वा तृणेन तांस् तुल्यान् विचचार गतव्यथः ॥
ते चापि रथिनां श्रेष्ठा भीमाय निशिताञ् शरान् ॥
प्रेषयाम् आसुर् अव्यग्राः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥

kṣurapreṇa sutīkṣṇena ciccheda kṛtahastavat ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya kṛtavarmā vṛkodaram ||
ājaghāna bhruvor madhye nārācena paraṃtapa ||
bhīmas tu samare viddhvā śalyaṃ navabhir āyasaiḥ ||
bhagadattaṃ tribhiś caiva kṛtavarmāṇam aṣṭabhiḥ ||
dvābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ ca vivyādha gautamaprabhṛtīn rathān ||
te tu taṃ samare rājan vivyadhur niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
sa tathā pīḍyamāno 'pi sarvatas tair mahārathaiḥ ||
matvā tṛṇena tāṃs tulyān vicacāra gatavyathaḥ ||
te cāpi rathināṃ śreṣṭhā bhīmāya niśitāñ śarān ||
preṣayām āsur avyagrāḥ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
Shalya could not bear Bhimasena's valor. Having fitted sharp arrows polished by the smith, he pierced Bhima with seventy arrows and cried, 'Stand! Stand!' Then Kripa, Kritavarman, Bhagadatta, Vinda and Anuvinda, Chitrasena, Durmarshana, Vikarna, and the valiant king of Sindhu — these tamers of foes — swiftly pierced Bhima for Shalya's sake. But Bhima pierced each of them back with five arrows, and Shalya with seventy and then ten more. Shalya pierced him with nine arrows and again with five, and struck his charioteer deeply in a vital spot with a bhalla. Seeing Vishoka pierced, mighty Bhimasena drove three arrows into the arms and chest of the king of Madra. Likewise he struck the other great bowmen, each with three straight-flying arrows, and roared like a lion. These vigilant great bowmen then struck the unconquerable Pandava hard at his vital points, each with three keen-tipped arrows. But the great bowman Bhimasena, though sorely pierced, did not waver, like a mountain under streams of water poured down by rain clouds. The greatly renowned Bhima, having sorely pierced Shalya with nine arrows, also pierced the king of Pragjyotisha firmly with a hundred arrows, O king. Then, with a very sharp razor-arrow, he cut through the bow together with its arrow of noble Satvata, as skillfully as a master craftsman. Kritavarman then took up another bow and struck Vrikodara between the eyebrows with a naracha, O scorcher of foes. But Bhima, in battle, having pierced Shalya with nine iron arrows, Bhagadatta with three, and Kritavarman with eight, pierced the chariot-warriors beginning with Gautama, each with two. But they, in battle, O king, pierced him with sharp arrows. Though thus hard pressed on every side by those great chariot-warriors, he deemed them equal to a blade of grass and moved about untroubled. And these finest of chariot-warriors sent sharp arrows at Bhima calmly, by the hundreds and thousands.
