"Arjuna, having reached the son of Ganga, pressed him with sharp arrows and rushed upon him as he stood ready for battle, like a rutting elephant in a forest. Against that Partha came forth the valiant Bhagadatta, mighty, mounted on an elephant maddened with rut and streaming in three places. When this creature, like Mahendra's own elephant, suddenly bore down upon him, Bibhatsu met it, exerting his utmost effort. Then king Bhagadatta, mounted on the elephant, began to check Arjuna in battle with a rain of arrows. But Arjuna, in the great battle, pierced the approaching elephant, which resembled silver, with bright sharp iron arrows. Kaunteya urged Shikhandin on, saying, "Go! Go!" and told him, O great king: "Go against Bhishma, slay him!" Then the Pragjyotisha king left the Pandava and hastened, O king, toward Drupada's chariot. After this, O great king, Arjuna, placing Shikhandin before him, rushed swiftly upon Bhishma, and the battle unfolded from there. Then all your heroes rushed shouting upon the impetuous Pandava in battle; it seemed a wonder. But Arjuna, O lord of the peoples, scattered the manifold divisions of your sons, as the wind scatters clouds in the sky. Shikhandin, approaching the grandsire of the Bharatas, swiftly and undisturbed covered him with a multitude of arrows. And Bhishma, the great charioteer, slew in battle the Somakas who followed in Partha's steps, and held back the army of the Pandavas."
