Having heard the speech of your son, the bowman, O king, the mighty maharathas gathered against Arjuna. The Videhas, the Kalingas with the bands of Dasherakas, the Nishadas and the Sauviras rushed into the great battle; the Bahlikas, the Daradas, the warriors of east and north, the Malavas, the Abhishahas, the Shurasenas, the Shibis, the Vasatis, Shalva's allies, the Trigartas, and the Ambashthas together with the Kekayas - all of them charged at Partha in battle like moths upon a fire. Then Dhananjaya, calling to mind the divine astras and setting them to his bowstring, swiftly burned all these maharathas together with their armies. With his mighty astras and the fiery force of his arrows, Bibhatsu scorched them as fire scorches moths. As this firm-bowed archer loosed thousands of arrows, the Gandiva seemed to blaze in the sky. Afflicted by arrows, their chariots and standards scattered, the kings who had gathered against the monkey-bannered Arjuna no longer returned to the fight, O great king. Struck down by Kiritin's arrows, charioteers fell with their standards, horsemen together with their horses, and elephants together with their drivers. The earth was covered with the arrows loosed from Arjuna's hand and with the royal armies fleeing in every direction. Then the mighty-armed Partha, having routed the army, sent his arrows against Duhshasana in battle. The iron-headed shafts pierced your son Duhshasana and all sank into the earth like serpents into an anthill; then Arjuna slew his horses and felled his charioteer. He stripped Vivimshati of his chariot with twenty arrows, O lord, and struck him hard again with five more curved shafts. Kripa, Shalya, and Vikarna, wounding them with a multitude of iron arrows, the white-horsed son of Kunti likewise stripped of their chariots. Thus these five - Kripa, Shalya, Duhshasana, Vikarna, and Vivimshati, O worthy one - stripped of their chariots and vanquished by Savyasachin, fled the battle. In the forenoon, having vanquished the maharathas, Partha blazed in battle like a smokeless fire. With a shower of arrows, like the radiant sun, he cast down other kings as well, O great king. Having turned the maharathas to flight with showers of arrows, he set flowing in that battle a great river running with blood, through the midst of the Kuru and Pandava armies, O Bharata.

Duryodhana throws whole peoples against Arjuna, yet Sanjaya describes them as moths before a fire. Arjuna's victory here is no chance breakthrough but the manifestation of divine weapons joined to an unwavering resolve to carry the path to Bhishma through to its end.
