Then, to the blare of [war] trumpets and the mighty roar of kettledrums, the armies of your side and of the foes went forth as well. At the close of the day, O lord of kings, when the son of Jahnavi [Bhishma] had fallen, having succumbed to the power of wrath, their minds struck by Time, disregarding the beneficial word of the great-souled son of Ganga, the best of the Bharatas went forth, weapons taken up on every side.

Scarcely having taken leave of the grandsire, the warriors "disregard his beneficial word" — the very testament of peace he gave the living: they honor the death of the righteous with ritual but not with obedience, and this is mere show of reverence. It is significant that they are driven by "wrath" and "minds clouded by Time": where wisdom falls silent, fury rules, and a man who gives himself to it becomes himself an instrument of fate. The verse teaches that to honor a departed teacher with a bow while rejecting his teaching is hypocrisy; and that war begun anew over the still-warm bed of a peacemaker is a sign of the blindness that leads a lineage to ruin.
