कुबेर इव यक्षाणां मरुताम् इव वासवः ॥

[Duryodhana:] May you, lord, protect all of us, as Vasava [Indra protects] the gods. Led by you, we desire to overcome our enemies, O best of the twice-born — you who are among the Rudras like Kapalin [Shiva], among the Vasus like fire [Agni], among the Yakshas like Kubera, among the Maruts like Vasava [Indra].

Duryodhana exalts Drona through a chain of 'foremost among his own' — Shiva among the Rudras, Agni among the Vasus, Kubera among the Yakshas: he sets the teacher above all, for in him he sees the pledge of desired victory. But this lavish praise is again self-interested — 'led by you, we desire to overcome our enemies': behind every comparison stands not reverence but need. The verse teaches that exaltation driven by the thirst for gain readily finds lofty words, but their worth is small; and that true reverence for a teacher is measured not by the grandeur of comparisons but by readiness to follow his truth — from which Duryodhana is precisely estranged, for he honors in Drona strength, not dharma.
