द्रोण उवाच
वेदं षडङ्गं वेदाहम् अर्थविद्यां च मानवीम् ॥
त्रैयम्बकम् अथेष्वस्त्रम् अस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥
ये चाप्य् उक्ता मयि गुणा भवद्भिर् जयकाङ्क्षिभिः ॥
चिकीर्षुस् तान् अहं सत्यान् योधयिष्यामि पाण्डवान् ॥
droṇa uvāca
vedaṃ ṣaḍaṅgaṃ vedāham arthavidyāṃ ca mānavīm ||
traiyambakam atheṣvastram astrāṇi vividhāni ca ||
ye cāpy uktā mayi guṇā bhavadbhir jayakāṅkṣibhiḥ ||
cikīrṣus tān ahaṃ satyān yodhayiṣyāmi pāṇḍavān ||
[Drona:] I know the sixfold Veda, the human science of [worldly] gain [artha-shastra], the weapon of Tryambaka [Shiva], the art of archery, and manifold [magical] weapons. And those virtues that you, desiring victory, have ascribed to me -- wishing to prove them true, I shall fight the Pandavas.

Drona accepts command with words that are honest and restrained: he does not boast beyond measure but lists what he truly possesses, and promises to 'prove true' the virtues ascribed to him -- that is, to vindicate them by deed rather than by word. Herein lies the dignity of a man of knowledge: not to deny one's gifts out of false modesty, yet not to exalt oneself either. Yet all this genuine wisdom and power are now given over to an unrighteous cause -- 'I shall fight the Pandavas': the knower of the Veda and the ascetic enters battle against righteousness, bound by the duty of shelter and service. The verse teaches that an honest acknowledgment of one's gifts and the resolve to vindicate them by deed are worthy; but that the greatest knowledge and valor, placed in the service of untruth, become a tragedy for the one who possesses them.
