शिबयः शूरसेनाश् च शूद्राश् च मलदैः सह ॥
सौवीराः कितवाः प्राच्या दाक्षिणात्याश् च सर्वशः ॥
तवात्मजं पुरस्कृत्य सूतपुत्रस्य पृष्ठतः ॥

The Madras, the Trigartas with the Ambashthas, the dwellers of the west and north, the Shibis, the Shurasenas and the Shudras with the Maladas, the Sauviras, the Kitavas, the eastern and southern peoples — all of them, putting your son [Duryodhana] forward, took their place behind the son of the suta [Karna].

The list of peoples closes with all of them arraying themselves 'behind Karna,' with Duryodhana set in front: the whole medley of the alliance is gathered around two men — an ambitious man and his devoted friend. It is telling that even Shudras, and many tribes far removed from the quarrel of the Kurus, are drawn into a war not their own: one man's greed sweeps multitudes to ruin who had no part in his enmity. The verse teaches that a ruler's wrongdoing brings disaster upon peoples who have no share in it; that a war born of one man's ambition becomes a grave for thousands; and that those gathered for an unrighteous cause, however numerous and valiant, will share the fate of the one they followed.
