स पाण्डवानां महतीं महेष्वासो महाद्युतिः ॥
वेगेनाभ्यद्रवत् सेनां किरञ् शरशतैः शितैः ॥
द्रोणम् अभ्युद्यतं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवाः सह सृञ्जयैः ॥
प्रत्यगृह्णंस् तदा राजञ् शरवर्षैः पृथक् पृथक् ॥

droṇam abhyudyataṃ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavāḥ saha sṛñjayaiḥ ||
pratyagṛhṇaṃs tadā rājañ śaravarṣaiḥ pṛthak pṛthak ||
Then the battle broke out between warriors craving each other's destruction; the roar of the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas filled the whole world. Inflamed against one another, the Pandavas and Kauravas struck each other with sharp arrows, craving victory, dealing blows. He, the great archer Drona, of great splendor, charged with speed upon the vast army of the Pandavas, scattering hundreds of sharp arrows upon it. Seeing Drona bearing down upon them, the Pandavas together with the Srinjayas met him then, O king, each with his own shower of arrows.

The battle breaks out -- and "the roar fills the whole world": human fury, reaching its limit, deafens creation itself. Drona, "of great splendor," is the first to charge: the teacher whose wisdom could have kept the peace now leads a deadly onslaught -- the bitterest fruit of duty surrendered to a wrongful cause. The verse teaches that war turns light into an instrument of darkness: gifts given for good come to serve destruction; that the mutual craving for each other's death gripping both sides is the very face of adharma, which has driven kinsmen into fratricide; and that the brilliance of valor displayed in such a cause does not lessen but only throws into relief its sorrowful wrongness.
