अस्माकं शकटव्यूहो द्रोणेन विहितो ऽभवत् ॥
परेषां क्रौञ्च एवासीद् व्यूहो राजन् महात्मनाम् ॥
प्रीयमाणेन विहितो धर्मराजेन भारत ॥
व्यूहप्रमुखतस् तेषां तस्थतुः पुरुषर्षभौ ॥
वानरध्वजम् उच्छ्रित्य विष्वक्सेनधनंजयौ ॥
ककुदं सर्वसैन्यानां लक्ष्म सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥
आदित्यपथगः केतुः पार्थस्यामिततेजसः ॥
दीपयाम् आस तत् सैन्यं पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः ॥
यथा प्रज्वलितः सूर्यो युगान्ते वै वसुंधराम् ॥

dīpayām āsa tat sainyaṃ pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ ||
yathā prajvalitaḥ sūryo yugānte vai vasuṃdharām ||
Our array was arranged by Drona in the shape of a wagon [shakata-vyuha], while the enemy, the great-souled ones, had, O king, the heron array [krauncha]. At the head of their array stood the two bulls among men — Vishvaksena [Krishna] and Dhananjaya [Arjuna] — having raised the banner bearing the monkey [Hanuman]. The crown of all armies, the mark of all bowmen, the towering standard of Partha [Arjuna] of measureless splendor illumined that army of the great-souled Pandava, as the blazing sun illumines the earth at the close of the world age.

The two armies are set against each other in both formation and banner: Drona's wagon array against the Pandavas' heron, Karna's elephant-cloth banner against the monkey standard, beneath which stand Krishna and Arjuna together. Arjuna's banner 'illumines the army as the sun illumines the earth at the close of the age' — an image both grand and twofold: it brings light to its own and incineration to enemies, like the fire at the end of a yuga. It is telling that two stand at the head of the Pandavas, yet the true center is Vishvaksena [Krishna], the Lord Himself, who has taken up the service of a charioteer. The verse teaches that an army led by the Supreme is bathed in an invincible light; and that the banner of truth, like the sun of the final day, is light for some but a flame of ruin for those who persist in evil.
