युगंधरस् ततो राजन् भारद्वाजं महारथम् ॥
वारयाम् आस संक्रुद्धं वातोद्धूतम् इवार्णवम् ॥
युधिष्ठिरं स विद्ध्वा तु शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
युगंधरं च भल्लेन रथनीडाद् अपाहरत् ॥
ततो विराटद्रुपदौ केकयाः सात्यकिः शिबिः ॥
व्याघ्रदत्तश् च पाञ्चाल्यः सिंहसेनश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
एते चान्ये च बहवः परीप्सन्तो युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
आवव्रुस् तस्य पन्थानं किरन्तः सायकान् बहून् ॥

yudhiṣṭhiraṃ sa viddhvā tu śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
yugaṃdharaṃ ca bhallena rathanīḍād apāharat ||
tato virāṭadrupadau kekayāḥ sātyakiḥ śibiḥ ||
vyāghradattaś ca pāñcālyaḥ siṃhasenaś ca vīryavān ||
ete cānye ca bahavaḥ parīpsanto yudhiṣṭhiram ||
āvavrus tasya panthānaṃ kirantaḥ sāyakān bahūn ||
Then Yugandhara, O king, checked the enraged Bharadvaja [Drona], that mighty chariot-warrior, as a shore checks the ocean whipped up by a gale. But Drona, having struck Yudhishthira with evenly wrought arrows, felled Yugandhara from the platform of his chariot with a broad-headed shaft. Then Virata and Drupada, the Kekayas, Satyaki, Shibi, the Panchala prince Vyaghradatta, and the mighty Simhasena — these and many others, striving to shield Yudhishthira, barred Drona's path, showering him with a multitude of arrows.

One after another, defenders rise between Drona and Yudhishthira, each a shield bought at the price of life: a living wall of loyalty closes around the king of dharma. So love and duty in his subjects show themselves: many are ready to die for the guardian of truth. Yet Drona sweeps them aside one by one — his might seems unstoppable. The verse teaches that the righteous are guarded not by one strength alone, but by the readiness of many to give themselves for him; that loyalty shows itself in standing as a shield before threatening ruin; and that even an unstoppable onslaught is broken against the united self-sacrifice of defenders who purchase the king's life with their own.
