ततो ऽर्जुनं वासुदेवः प्रत्युवाचार्थवद् वचः ॥
शृणु गुह्यम् इदं पार्थ यथा वृत्तं पुरानघ ॥
चतुर्मूर्तिर् अहं शश्वल् लोकत्राणार्थम् उद्यतः ॥
आत्मानं प्रविभज्येह लोकानां हितम् आदधे ॥
एका मूर्तिस् तपश्चर्यां कुरुते मे भुवि स्थिता ॥
अपरा पश्यति जगत् कुर्वाणं साध्वसाधुनी ॥
अपरा कुरुते कर्म मानुषं लोकम् आश्रिता ॥
शेते चतुर्थी त्व् अपरा निद्रां वर्षसहस्रिकाम् ॥
tato 'rjunaṃ vāsudevaḥ pratyuvācārthavad vacaḥ ||
śṛṇu guhyam idaṃ pārtha yathā vṛttaṃ purānagha ||
caturmūrtir ahaṃ śaśval lokatrāṇārtham udyataḥ ||
ātmānaṃ pravibhajyeha lokānāṃ hitam ādadhe ||
ekā mūrtis tapaścaryāṃ kurute me bhuvi sthitā ||
aparā paśyati jagat kurvāṇaṃ sādhvasādhunī ||
aparā kurute karma mānuṣaṃ lokam āśritā ||
śete caturthī tv aparā nidrāṃ varṣasahasrikām ||
Then Vasudeva replied to Arjuna with a word full of meaning: "Hearken to this secret, O Partha, as it was of old, O blameless one. Abiding in four forms, I am eternally engaged for the protection of the worlds; having divided myself here, I establish the welfare of the worlds. One form of mine performs austerity, abiding on the earth; another watches over the world, as it does good and evil. Another performs human deeds, abiding in the world of men; the fourth, yet another, sleeps a thousand-year sleep."

The Lord discloses a hidden secret: He, being one, abides at once in four forms — an ascetic, an all-seeing witness, one active in the world, and one sleeping a thousand-year sleep — and all this "for the protection of the worlds." Thus He shows that the Almighty is not detached from creation but ceaselessly cares for it through all His forms. It is significant that one of the forms "watches over the world as it does good and evil": the Lord is the unsleeping Witness of all deeds. The verse teaches that God is not only distant and unmoving but present in the world in manifold ways — as ascetic, as witness, and as actor; that the very being of the worlds is sustained by His ceaseless care; and that no deed, good or evil, escapes His all-seeing eye, for one of His eternal forms is the unsleeping Witness of all that is done.
