The horses, charioteer, bow, parasol, chariot, and banner of Vrishaka, son of Subala, Partha shattered to bits with sharp arrows. Then Arjuna, with masses of arrows and diverse weapons, once again drove the Gandharas, with the son of Subala at their head, into confusion. And then, in rage, Dhananjaya sent five hundred Gandhara warriors, weapons upraised, to the realm of death with his arrows.

Arjuna first dismantles piece by piece all of Vrishaka's equipage -- horses, charioteer, bow, chariot -- and only then falls upon the army. Here the order of a master shows itself: first disarm the leader, then crush the many. The bare tally -- "five hundred warriors to the realm of death" -- is not boasting but a sober record of the scale of slaughter. The verse teaches that a skilled warrior acts by method, not at random, first stripping the enemy of means, then of strength; that one man, master of himself and his weapon, can send whole hundreds "to the realm of death"; and that the tradition, keeping this merciless count, does not revel in it but shows the true, unembellished cost of war, in which behind every number lie five hundred cut-off lives.
