स्वान् एव बहवो जघ्नुर् विद्रवन्तस् ततस् ततः ॥

The manifold regiments of your sons, O Bharata, Arjuna scattered, as the wind scatters clouds in the sky in due time. Him advancing like Vasava, pouring down torrents of arrows, the great archer, the tiger among men, fierce, no one could check. Those [warriors] of yours, struck down by Partha, sorely stricken with turmoil, many slew their own kin, fleeing hither and thither.

Warriors fleeing in panic "slay their own kin" -- terror turns their weapons against their own ranks. This shows that the greater harm to an army comes not from the enemy but from the fear that seizes it: a disordered multitude destroys itself. It is telling that Arjuna alone does not so much kill as sow the confusion in which men strike down men. The verse teaches that fear is more dangerous than the sword: once sown in the ranks, it turns them against themselves; that shattered unity is more ruinous for an army than the fiercest foe; and that a wise commander guards his men above all from panic, for it accomplishes what even a formidable enemy cannot -- making warriors destroy one another in blind flight.
