चिच्छेद प्रहसन् राजा धर्मपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ॥
अक्ष्णोर् निमेषमात्रेण सो ऽन्यद् आदाय कार्मुकम् ॥
विव्याध दशभिः पार्थ तांश् चैवान्यांस् त्रिभिस् त्रिभिः ॥

Then, taking aim at his bow with a sharp gilded bhalla-arrow, the valorous king, the son of Dharma [Yudhishthira], severed it with a smile. But he [Jayadratha], in the blink of an eye, taking another bow, wounded Partha [Yudhishthira] with ten arrows, and the rest with three each.

Even when Yudhishthira severs his bow, Jayadratha, 'in the blink of an eye,' takes another and strikes on: Shiva's boon makes him tireless at the barrier. Thus the potency of a divine gift shows itself — it not only bestows strength but also guards against defeat, making good every loss. It is telling that even the King of Dharma is powerless to break this barrier. The verse teaches that a strength granted from above surpasses the ordinary measure of endurance, recovering from blows instantly; that while the gift's power lasts, the barrier cannot be overcome; and that Jayadratha, invulnerable at the gate, stands not by his own valor but by what was granted him — and so his undoing will come not from those he holds back, but from the one alone excepted from the gift, Arjuna.
