The verse draws the line: everything rests on Shiva's boon — 'by the boon of the best of gods' Jayadratha repels every one. Thus it shows itself that the fateful barrier is not the fruit of ordinary valor but the working of a power granted from above, one having its own limit and term. It is telling how the phrase 'whoever... that one' repeats — none of those who strive gets through, so long as the boon endures. The verse teaches that there are barriers set up by power from on high against which ordinary effort is in vain; that until the term of the boon runs out, it cannot be overcome; and that the resolution of such a barrier is possible only where the boon itself admits an exception — and the one excepted from it was Arjuna alone, destined to break this barrier in vengeance for the boy, since against him alone Shiva's boon is powerless.
