भीमस्यापोथयत् केतुं धनुर् अश्वांश् च मारिष ॥
स हताश्वाद् अवप्लुत्य छिन्नधन्वा रथोत्तमात् ॥
सात्यकेर् आप्लुतो यानं गिर्यग्रम् इव केसरी ॥

dhanur dhvajaṃ ca chatraṃ ca kṣitau kṣipram apātayat ||
so 'nyad ādāya balavān sajyaṃ kṛtvā ca kārmukam ||

sa hatāśvād avaplutya chinnadhanvā rathottamāt ||
sātyaker āpluto yānaṃ giryagram iva kesarī ||
Having perceived his agility, Bhima then, with three bhalla-arrows, at once felled his bow, banner, and parasol to the ground. He, the mighty one, taking another bow and stringing it, smashed Bhima's banner, bow, and horses, O worthy one. He [Bhima], his bow broken, having jumped off the excellent chariot whose horses were slain, sprang onto Satyaki's chariot, just as a lion onto a mountain peak.

A duel of equals: Bhima knocks down Jayadratha's bow, banner, and parasol — he instantly takes another and smashes Bhima's own equipment in turn. The power of the boon puts Jayadratha on par with the most formidable warriors. And Bhima, having lost his horses and bow, does not lose heart, but leaps onto Satyaki's chariot, 'like a lion onto a mountain peak' — the resourcefulness of a warrior for whom nothing is hopeless. The verse teaches that a granted strength can stand against even the greatest, recovering from any damage; that a true warrior, stripped of everything, does not surrender but finds new footing; and that in this image of the lion leaping onto the peak an undaunted spirit shows itself, one that sees in loss not an end but merely a change of position.
