译文
He, glorious and mighty, struck back the son of Drona, the assailant, with seventy-three straight-flying, gold-feathered arrows. While he pressed him, Drona, anxious for his son, poured down a hundred arrows on Abhimanyu, and Ashvatthaman too shot eight -- trying to shield his father in battle.

Drona, ‘anxious for his son,’ pours down a hundred arrows to shield Ashvatthaman; and the son, in turn, fights ‘trying to shield his father.’ Paternal and filial love -- sacred in themselves -- are here jointly turned against the youth. A bitter irony: the very feelings that move Arjuna for Abhimanyu's sake move Drona and his son for one another -- but on the ruinous side. The verse teaches that the love of father and son is equally sacred, on whichever side it appears; that these noblest bonds, in an unrighteous war, are turned into instruments of wrongdoing; and that the tradition, showing the mutual defense of Drona and Ashvatthaman against a lone youth, lays bare a tragedy: those who out of love guard one another together destroy another's child, one just as beloved by his own father.
