व्यसिचर्मेषुपूर्णाङ्गः सो ऽन्तरिक्षात् पुनः क्षितिम् ॥
आस्थितश् चक्रम् उद्यम्य द्रोणं क्रुद्धो ऽभ्यधावत ॥
स चक्ररेणूज्ज्वलशोभिताङ्गो; बभाव् अतीवोन्नतचक्रपाणिः ॥
रणे ऽभिमन्युः क्षणदासुभद्रः; स वासुभद्रानुकृतिं प्रकुर्वन् ॥
स्रुतरुधिरकृतैकरागवक्त्रो; भ्रुकुटिपुटाकुटिलो ऽतिसिंहनादः ॥
प्रभुर् अमितबलो रणे ऽभिमन्युर्; नृपवरमध्यगतो भृशं व्यराजत् ॥

srutarudhirakṛtaikarāgavaktro; bhrukuṭipuṭākuṭilo 'tisiṃhanādaḥ ||
prabhur amitabalo raṇe 'bhimanyur; nṛpavaramadhyagato bhṛśaṃ vyarājat ||
Without sword or shield, his body full of arrows, he came down from the sky again to the ground, and, raising a chariot-wheel, rushed in fury upon Drona. With his body shining with the wheel's dust, he blazed beyond measure, the wheel held high in his hand — in the battle Abhimanyu, the moon-bright son of Subhadra, showing forth the likeness of Vasudeva [Krishna]. With his face made one color by streaming blood, his brows fiercely knit, roaring like a lion, mighty and boundless in strength, Abhimanyu in the battle, standing amid the finest of kings, shone forth exceedingly.

Disarmed to the very last, the boy lifts a chariot-wheel and rushes upon Drona — "showing forth the likeness of Vasudeva," of Krishna, who raises His own discus. In this supreme moment the child becomes like the Lord Himself: stripped of everything, he shines brighter than all the armed, for the image of the Divine shows through him. It is significant that the tradition crowns the account of his disarming with this god-likeness — those who trampled dharma took his weapons from him, but could not take away the radiance of his spirit. The verse teaches that when everything external is taken from the righteous, the inner, divine nature shines through all the more clearly; that one faithful to dharma to the last, though stripped of sword and shield, becomes like the Lord with His discus; and that Abhimanyu, his face streaming with blood, his wheel raised, shining amid his enemies with "the likeness of Krishna," shows forth the highest victory — a victory of spirit that no lawlessness has power to darken, for the body can be disarmed, but not the radiance of a soul faithful to dharma.
