यत् तत् सर्वे पराभूय पर्यवारयतार्जुनिम् ॥
सिन्धुराजानम् आश्रित्य स वो मध्ये कथं हतः ॥
कथं त्वयि च कर्णे च कृपे शल्ये च जीवति ॥
अश्वत्थाम्नि च कौरव्य निधनं सैन्धवो ऽगमत् ॥
यद् वस् तत् सर्वराजानस् तेजस् तिग्मम् उपासते ॥
सिन्धुराजं परित्रातुं स वो मध्ये कथं हतः ॥
मय्य् एव हि विशेषेण तथा दुर्योधन त्वयि ॥
आशंसत परित्राणम् अर्जुनात् स महीपतिः ॥
yat tat sarve parābhūya paryavārayatārjunim ||
sindhurājānam āśritya sa vo madhye kathaṃ hataḥ ||
kathaṃ tvayi ca karṇe ca kṛpe śalye ca jīvati ||
aśvatthāmni ca kauravya nidhanaṃ saindhavo 'gamat ||
yad vas tat sarvarājānas tejas tigmam upāsate ||
sindhurājaṃ paritrātuṃ sa vo madhye kathaṃ hataḥ ||
mayy eva hi viśeṣeṇa tathā duryodhana tvayi ||
āśaṃsata paritrāṇam arjunāt sa mahīpatiḥ ||
"[At] that time when you all, having overcome [everyone else], surrounded the son of Arjuna [Abhimanyu], relying on the Sindhu king [Jayadratha] — [now] he, in your midst, how [then] is he slain? How, with you and Karna, with Kripa and Shalya alive, and with Ashvatthaman, O Kauravya, did Saindhava come to his death? [That might] of yours, fierce, to which all kings respectfully resort, [meant] to save the Sindhu king — [how then] is he slain in your midst? For on me especially, and so, Duryodhana, on you, that king relied for rescue from Arjuna."

Drona bitterly links two deeds together: you all together surrounded the boy Abhimanyu, relying on Jayadratha — and now Jayadratha himself is slain in your midst. It is telling how this mirrors back: the wrong done against Arjuna's son returns as the death of the one who sheltered behind your backs. The verse teaches that evil done together returns together; and the one on whose protection the guilty relied does not save him — for against injustice not even the fearsome might of many can stand.
