संजय उवाच
ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि हतशिष्टानि यानि वै ॥
सेनागोप्तॄन् अथादिश्य पुनर् व्यूहम् अकल्पयत् ॥
द्रोणः पुरस्ताज् जघने तु शल्यस्; तथा द्रौणिः पार्श्वतः सौबलश् च ॥
स्वयं तु सर्वाणि बलानि राजन्; राजाभ्ययाद् गोपयन् वै निशायाम् ॥
उवाच सर्वांश् च पदातिसंघान्; दुर्योधनः पार्थिव सान्त्वपूर्वम् ॥
उत्सृज्य सर्वे परमायुधानि; गृह्णीत हस्तैर् ज्वलितान् प्रदीपान् ॥
ते चोदिताः पार्थिवसत्तमेन; ततः प्रहृष्टा जगृहुः प्रदीपान् ॥
सा भूय एव ध्वजिनी विभक्ता; व्यरोचताग्निप्रभया निशायाम् ॥

uvāca sarvāṃś ca padātisaṃghān; duryodhanaḥ pārthiva sāntvapūrvam ||
utsṛjya sarve paramāyudhāni; gṛhṇīta hastair jvalitān pradīpān ||
te coditāḥ pārthivasattamena; tataḥ prahṛṣṭā jagṛhuḥ pradīpān ||
sā bhūya eva dhvajinī vibhaktā; vyarocatāgniprabhayā niśāyām ||
Then all the hosts that had survived the carnage -- having appointed their commanders, [Drona] arranged the battle order once more. Drona in front, Shalya in the rear, Drauni [Ashvatthaman] and Saubala [Shakuni] on the flanks; and he himself, guarding all the forces, O king, the king [Duryodhana] went about in the night. And Duryodhana addressed all the companies of foot, O sovereign, gently: "Lay aside all your finest weapons, take blazing lamps in your hands." Urged on by the best of kings, they then joyfully took up the lamps; and that host, divided anew among them, shone with fire's radiance in the night.

Duryodhana finds a way out of the blindness -- not through arms but through light: he bids the infantry lay down their spears and raise lamps. It is telling that he commands them "gently": even a mighty king, in need of common footmen's willing effort, speaks softly to them. The verse teaches that even in the dark of enmity the mind seeks light, and that true need humbles pride: where the goodwill of many is required, even a lord speaks not by command but by kindness.
