संजय उवाच
प्रकाशिते तथा लोके रजसा च तमोवृते ॥
समाजग्मुर् अथो वीराः परस्परवधैषिणः ॥
ते समेत्य रणे राजञ् शस्त्रप्रासासिधारिणः ॥
परस्परम् उदैक्षन्त परस्परकृतागसः ॥
प्रदीपानां सहस्रैश् च दीप्यमानैः समन्ततः ॥
विरराज तदा भूमिर् द्यौर् ग्रहैर् इव भारत ॥
उल्काशतैः प्रज्वलितै रणभूमिर् व्यराजत ॥
दह्यमानेव लोकानाम् अभावे वै वसुंधरा ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
prakāśite tathā loke rajasā ca tamovṛte ||
samājagmur atho vīrāḥ parasparavadhaiṣiṇaḥ ||
te sametya raṇe rājañ śastraprāsāsidhāriṇaḥ ||
parasparam udaikṣanta parasparakṛtāgasaḥ ||
pradīpānāṃ sahasraiś ca dīpyamānaiḥ samantataḥ ||
virarāja tadā bhūmir dyaur grahair iva bhārata ||
ulkāśataiḥ prajvalitai raṇabhūmir vyarājata ||
dahyamāneva lokānām abhāve vai vasuṃdharā ||
When the world was thus lit up, though shrouded in dust and darkness, the heroes came together then, eager to slay one another. Meeting in battle, O king, bearing weapons, spears, and swords, they gazed upon each other, having wronged one another. And with thousands of lamps blazing on every side, the earth then shone like the sky with its stars, O Bharata. With hundreds of blazing torches the battlefield shone, like the earth ablaze at the dissolution of the worlds.

Light restored sight — and the restored sight at once serves only slaughter: the heroes 'gaze upon each other' so as to strike more surely. It is telling that the earth wrapped in fires is likened not to a festival but to the dissolution of the worlds. The verse teaches that illumination in itself is no blessing: given over to enmity, light only makes destruction more precise; and eyes turned upon a brother as upon an enemy are a seeing blindness more terrible than the darkness of night.
