And at Drupada, with his army and companions, Vrishasena restrained him in the fight — Drupada, rushing toward Drona, the great warrior. Virata, swiftly advancing toward Drona's destruction, the king of Madra (Shalya), wrathful, restrained him, O Bharata. Then at the advancing Shatanika, son of Nakula, furious in battle, Chitrasena swiftly blocked him with arrows — though he thirsted for Drona's destruction. And at Arjuna, best of fighters, rushing forward, the great warrior, Alambusa, O great king, lord of rakshasas, blocked the way.

Every path to Drona is barred: whoever rushes toward him meets his own opponent. It is telling that a rakshasa, Alambusa, is set against Arjuna — a superhuman force matched against the greatest archer among men. The verse teaches that a besieged center is defended by intercepting each thrust toward it, one by one; but such defense only delays the reckoning: a multitude of barriers checks the onslaught, yet does not cancel what it is aimed at.
