सुजिह्मं प्रेक्षमाणौ च राजन् विवृतलोचनौ ॥
क्रोधसंरक्तनयनौ निर्दहन्तौ परस्परम् ॥
स्यालस् तु तव संक्रुद्धो माद्रीपुत्रं हसन्न् इव ॥
कर्णिनैकेन विव्याध हृदये निशितेन ह ॥
नकुलस् तु भृशं विद्धः स्यालेन तव धन्विना ॥
निषसाद रथोपस्थे कश्मलं चैनम् आविशत् ॥
अत्यन्तवैरिणं दृप्तं दृष्ट्वा शत्रुं तथागतम् ॥
ननाद शकुनी राजंस् तपान्ते जलदो यथा ॥
sujihmaṃ prekṣamāṇau ca rājan vivṛtalocanau ||
krodhasaṃraktanayanau nirdahantau parasparam ||
syālas tu tava saṃkruddho mādrīputraṃ hasann iva ||
karṇinaikena vivyādha hṛdaye niśitena ha ||
nakulas tu bhṛśaṃ viddhaḥ syālena tava dhanvinā ||
niṣasāda rathopasthe kaśmalaṃ cainam āviśat ||
atyantavairiṇaṃ dṛptaṃ dṛṣṭvā śatruṃ tathāgatam ||
nanāda śakunī rājaṃs tapānte jalado yathā ||
Looking askance, O king, with eyes wide open, with eyes reddened by wrath, as if burning each other. And your enraged brother-in-law, as though laughing, pierced the son of Madri [Nakula] with one sharp barbed arrow in the heart. And Nakula, cruelly pierced by your bowman brother-in-law, sank onto the floor of his chariot, and faintness overcame him. Seeing his mortal enemy, arrogant, his foe in such a state, Shakuni roared, O king, like a cloud at the close of the hot season.

Shakuni exults over the stunned Nakula and roars "like a thundercloud": the gloating of the treacherous over the fallen. It is significant that his joy is called arrogant - pride foreruns swift retribution. The verse teaches that gloating over the fallen is unworthy and short-lived: whoever revels in another's misfortune already stands at the threshold of his own; for the wheel of battle turns quickly, and he who roars in triumph now will soon himself sink beneath an answering blow.
