वर्तमाने तु संग्रामे तस्मिन् वीरवरक्षये ॥
अतीव शुश्रुवे राजन् गाण्डीवस्य महास्वनः ॥
श्रुत्वा तु रथनिर्घोषं गाण्डीवस्य च निस्वनम् ॥
सूतपुत्रो ऽब्रवीद् राजन् दुर्योधनम् इदं वचः ॥
एष सर्वाञ् शिबीन् हत्वा मुख्यशश् च नरर्षभान् ॥
पौरवांश् च महेष्वासान् गाण्डीवनिनदो महान् ॥
श्रूयते रथघोषश् च वासवस्येव नर्दतः ॥
करोति पाण्डवो व्यक्तं कर्मौपयिकम् आत्मनः ॥

śrutvā tu rathanirghoṣaṃ gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanam ||

eṣa sarvāñ śibīn hatvā mukhyaśaś ca nararṣabhān ||
pauravāṃś ca maheṣvāsān gāṇḍīvaninado mahān ||
śrūyate rathaghoṣaś ca vāsavasyeva nardataḥ ||
karoti pāṇḍavo vyaktaṃ karmaupayikam ātmanaḥ ||
While that battle was raging, in that slaughter of the finest heroes, the great twang of the Gandiva was heard far off, O king. And hearing the rumble of the chariot and the twang of the Gandiva, the son of the suta [Karna] spoke this word to Duryodhana, O king: "Behold, having slain all the Shibis, and by name the bulls among men and the Pauravas, the great archers — the great rumble of the Gandiva [resounds]. And the rumble of the chariot is heard too, as of roaring Vasava [Indra]; the Pandava [Arjuna] clearly does a deed worthy of himself."

Karna recognizes Arjuna's deeds not by sight but by sound — by the rumble of the Gandiva and the roar of the chariot: the terrible warrior is betrayed by the very din of his weapon. It is telling that even an enemy admits: Arjuna "does a deed worthy of himself." The verse teaches that true greatness is known from afar and needs no witness of the eyes; a fair opponent gives credit to an enemy's valor — and the very ability to recognize a rival's greatness is itself a mark of nobility.
