अद्य कुन्तीसुतान् सर्वान् वासुदेवपुरोगमान् ॥
हत्वा संभक्षयिष्यामि सर्वैर् अनुचरैः सह ॥
निवारय बलं सर्वं वयं योत्स्याम पाण्डवान् ॥
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा हृष्टो दुर्योधनस् तदा ॥
प्रतिपूज्याब्रवीद् वाक्यं भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ॥
त्वां पुरस्कृत्य सगणं वयं योत्स्यामहे परान् ॥
न हि वैरान्तमनसः स्थास्यन्ति मम सैनिकाः ॥
एवम् अस्त्व् इति राजानम् उक्त्वा राक्षसपुंगवः ॥
अभ्ययात् त्वरितो भीमं सहितः पुरुषाशनैः ॥
adya kuntīsutān sarvān vāsudevapurogamān ||
hatvā saṃbhakṣayiṣyāmi sarvair anucaraiḥ saha ||
nivāraya balaṃ sarvaṃ vayaṃ yotsyāma pāṇḍavān ||
tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā hṛṣṭo duryodhanas tadā ||
pratipūjyābravīd vākyaṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ ||
tvāṃ puraskṛtya sagaṇaṃ vayaṃ yotsyāmahe parān ||
na hi vairāntamanasaḥ sthāsyanti mama sainikāḥ ||
evam astv iti rājānam uktvā rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ ||
abhyayāt tvarito bhīmaṃ sahitaḥ puruṣāśanaiḥ ||
"Today, having slain all the sons of Kunti with Vasudeva at their head, together with all their followers, I shall devour them; hold back all your army — we shall fight the Pandavas." Duryodhana gladly accepts the monster who promises to devour his enemies: despair clings to any strength, without discernment. It is telling that the king himself admits his soldiers will not hold without such support. The verse teaches that one weakening in righteousness seeks support in unholy things; and one who, losing his own, rejoices at a man-eater as an ally thereby reveals how low his spirit has fallen — for trust in a devourer of the living is the final step of a fall.
