स चाप्य् अशक्यः संग्रामे जेतुं सर्वैः सुरासुरैः ॥
वधार्थं तस्य जातो ऽहम् अन्येषां च सुरद्विषाम् ॥
त्वत्सहायो नरव्याघ्र लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥
हिडिम्बबककिर्मीरा भीमसेनेन पातिताः ॥
रावणेन समप्राणा ब्रह्मयज्ञविनाशनाः ॥
हतस् तथैव मायावी हैडिम्बेनाप्य् अलायुधः ॥
हैडिम्बश् चाप्य् उपायेन शक्त्या कर्णेन घातितः ॥
यदि ह्य् एनं नाहनिष्यत् कर्णः शक्त्या महामृधे ॥
मया वध्यो ऽभविष्यत् स भैमसेनिर् घटोत्कचः ॥
sa cāpy aśakyaḥ saṃgrāme jetuṃ sarvaiḥ surāsuraiḥ ||
vadhārthaṃ tasya jāto 'ham anyeṣāṃ ca suradviṣām ||
tvatsahāyo naravyāghra lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā ||
hiḍimbabakakirmīrā bhīmasenena pātitāḥ ||
rāvaṇena samaprāṇā brahmayajñavināśanāḥ ||
hatas tathaiva māyāvī haiḍimbenāpy alāyudhaḥ ||
haiḍimbaś cāpy upāyena śaktyā karṇena ghātitaḥ ||
yadi hy enaṃ nāhaniṣyat karṇaḥ śaktyā mahāmṛdhe ||
mayā vadhyo 'bhaviṣyat sa bhaimasenir ghaṭotkacaḥ ||
"And he [Shishupala] too was unconquerable in battle by all gods and asuras; for his slaying I was born, and for that of other haters of the gods, your helper, O tiger among men, out of desire for the good of the worlds. Hidimba, Baka, Kirmira were felled by Bhimasena — equal in might to Ravana, destroyers of brahmin sacrifices. Slain likewise, too, was the sorcerer Alayudha, by the son of Hidimba [Ghatotkacha]; and the son of Hidimba himself [Ghatotkacha] was slain by stratagem, by the spear, by Karna. Had Karna not slain him with the spear in the great battle..."

Krishna reveals the cause of his own descent: born to strike down haters of the gods for the good of the worlds. It is significant that even Ghatotkacha's death is written into this design — the removal of a destroyer of sacrifices. This verse teaches that the visible chances of battle are links in a great plan of the world's salvation; and behind all the deaths of this night stands a single purpose — the establishment of dharma by the hand of the one who descended for its sake.
