तं तथा व्यथितं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णो वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
मा व्यथां कुरु कौन्तेय नैतत् त्वय्य् उपपद्यते ॥
वैक्लव्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ यथा प्राकृतपूरुषे ॥
उत्तिष्ठ राजन् युध्यस्व वह गुर्वीं धुरं विभो ॥
त्वयि वैक्लव्यम् आपन्ने संशयो विजये भवेत् ॥
श्रुत्वा कृष्णस्य वचनं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
विमृज्य नेत्रे पाणिभ्यां कृष्णं वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
विदिता ते महाबाहो धर्माणां परमा गतिः ॥
ब्रह्महत्याफलं तस्य यः कृतं नावबुध्यते ॥

The king, his face filled with tears and sighing again and again, fell into a grievous faintness, seeing Karna's valor. Seeing him so distressed, Krishna spoke these words: "Do not give way to despair, son of Kunti; this does not befit you -- faintheartedness, O best of the Bharatas, as in a common man. Krishna lifts up the king: faintheartedness does not befit you, as it would a commoner; the outcome depends on your spirit. It is telling that the leader's burden lies not only in deeds but in steadiness of spirit, for it is transmitted to the army. The verse teaches that a commander's despondency is contagious and shakes the shared victory; and so the first duty of one who leads is not to let grief break him, for his firmness is the anchor of hope for all who follow.
