अल्पे च कारणे कृष्ण हतो गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥
सैन्धवो यादवश्रेष्ठ तच् च नातिप्रियं मम ॥
यदि शत्रुवधे न्याय्यो भवेत् कर्तुं च पाण्डवैः ॥
द्रोणकर्णौ रणे पूर्वं हन्तव्याव् इति मे मतिः ॥
एतौ मूलं हि दुःखानाम् अस्माकं पुरुषर्षभ ॥
एतौ रणे समासाद्य पराश्वस्तः सुयोधनः ॥
यत्र वध्यो भवेद् द्रोणः सूतपुत्रश् च सानुगः ॥
तत्रावधीन् महाबाहुः सैन्धवं दूरवासिनम् ॥

tatrāvadhīn mahābāhuḥ saindhavaṃ dūravāsinam ||
"Thus other great archers too felled the son of Subhadra [Abhimanyu] in battle. And for a small reason, O Krishna, Saindhava [Jayadratha] was slain by the wielder of Gandiva [Arjuna], O best of the Yadavas — and that does not gladden me greatly. If it is fitting for the Pandavas to act thus in the slaying of enemies, then Drona and Karna ought to be slain first in battle — such is my opinion. For these two are the root of our woes, O bull among men; having met these two in battle, Suyodhana is emboldened by them. Yudhishthira judges soberly: Arjuna slew Jayadratha "for a small reason," while the true root of the trouble is Drona and Karna. It is telling that even in grief the king can tell the essential from the secondary. The verse teaches that in struggle one must strike the root, not the branches: removing the cause of misfortune matters more than felling its lesser instruments; and the wisdom of a leader lies in not squandering strength on the particular, but concentrating it on what the outcome truly depends upon.
