मा क्रुधो भरतश्रेष्ठ मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥
प्राणिनाम् इह सर्वेषाम् एषा निष्ठा युधिष्ठिर ॥
भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैः पार्थिवैश् च महात्मभिः ॥
कौरवान् समरे राजन्न् अभियुध्यस्व भारत ॥
पञ्चमे दिवसे चैव पृथिवी ते भविष्यति ॥
नित्यं च पुरुषव्याघ्र धर्मम् एव विचिन्तय ॥
आनृशंस्यं तपो दानं क्षमां सत्यं च पाण्डव ॥
सेवेथाः परमप्रीतो यतो धर्मस् ततो जयः ॥
इत्य् उक्त्वा पाण्डवं व्यासस् तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥
mā krudho bharataśreṣṭha mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ||
prāṇinām iha sarveṣām eṣā niṣṭhā yudhiṣṭhira ||

kauravān samare rājann abhiyudhyasva bhārata ||
pañcame divase caiva pṛthivī te bhaviṣyati ||
nityaṃ ca puruṣavyāghra dharmam eva vicintaya ||
ānṛśaṃsyaṃ tapo dānaṃ kṣamāṃ satyaṃ ca pāṇḍava ||
sevethāḥ paramaprīto yato dharmas tato jayaḥ ||
ity uktvā pāṇḍavaṃ vyāsas tatraivāntaradhīyata ||
"Having made Vasavi's spear the instrument, he was indeed carried off by Time; for your very sake, my son, the rakshasa was slain in the encounter. Do not be angry, O best of the Bharatas, and do not give your mind over to grief; such is the end for all beings who live here, O Yudhishthira. With all your brothers and with kings great of spirit, overcome the Kauravas in battle, O king, O Bharata; and on the fifth day the earth will be yours. And always, O tiger among men, reflect on dharma itself — honor gentleness, austerity, charity, forbearance, and truth, O Pandava, with great contentment; where dharma is, there victory is also." Having spoken thus to the Pandava, Vyasa vanished right there.

Vyasa raises a single death to the level of a universal law: "such is the end for all beings." It is telling that consolation in grief is not denial of it, but placing it within the breadth of the whole: death is the lot of all. The verse teaches that sorrow subsides when viewed from the height of the eternal order; and the wise comforter does not urge forgetting the loss, but recalls the inevitable end of all that exists — and calls from grief toward duty and dharma.
