वैशंपायन उवाच
ततो ययुर् दारुकः केशवश् च; बभ्रुश् च रामस्य पदं पतन्तः ॥
अथापश्यन् रामम् अनन्तवीर्यं; वृक्षे स्थितं चिन्तयानं विविक्ते ॥
ततः समासाद्य महानुभावः; कृष्णस् तदा दारुकम् अन्वशासत् ॥
गत्वा कुरूञ् शीघ्रम् इमं महान्तं; पार्थाय शंसस्व वधं यदूनाम् ॥
ततो ऽर्जुनः क्षिप्रम् इहोपयातु; श्रुत्वा मृतान् यादवान् ब्रह्मशापात् ॥
इत्य् एवम् उक्तः स ययौ रथेन; कुरूंस् तदा दारुको नष्टचेताः ॥

tataḥ samāsādya mahānubhāvaḥ; kṛṣṇas tadā dārukam anvaśāsat ||
gatvā kurūñ śīghram imaṃ mahāntaṃ; pārthāya śaṃsasva vadhaṃ yadūnām ||
tato 'rjunaḥ kṣipram ihopayātu; śrutvā mṛtān yādavān brahmaśāpāt ||
ity evam uktaḥ sa yayau rathena; kurūṃs tadā dāruko naṣṭacetāḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: Then went Daruka and Keshava, and Babhru, hastening on the trail of Rama. They found Rama, of boundless valor, seated by a tree, lost in thought, in solitude. Thereupon the great Krishna, drawing near, instructed Daruka: "Go swiftly to the Kurus and tell Partha this great news of the slaughter of the Yadavas; let Arjuna come here at once, having heard of the Yadavas destroyed by the brahmin's curse." Thus instructed, Daruka, bereft of his senses, departed by chariot to the Kurus.

Even as the Lord's lila draws to its close, His first care is for His devotees: He sends for Arjuna so that the latter may protect those who remain. In the very hour of His departure, Krishna does not leave His own without provision, entrusting them to a faithful friend. Balarama, meanwhile, is found "in solitude, lost in thought" — the Lord and His brother meet the end of their earthly play in composed absorption, not in agitation. The verse teaches that as the Lord concludes His manifestation, He does not forget the welfare of His devotees but arranges for their protection before His departure; and that in the hour of the greatest upheaval it befits one not to lose one's senses in grief, as the charioteer Daruka does, but to remain in collected peace like Rama — for agitation blinds, while steadiness of spirit perceives behind calamity the will of Providence.
