दुर्वाससा पायसोच्छिष्टलिप्ते; यच् चाप्य् उक्तं तच् च सस्मार कृष्णः ॥
स चिन्तयानो ऽन्धकवृष्णिनाशं; कुरुक्षयं चैव महानुभावः ॥
मेने ततः संक्रमणस्य कालं; ततश् चकारेन्द्रियसंनिरोधम् ॥
स संनिरुद्धेन्द्रियवाङ्मनास् तु; शिश्ये महायोगम् उपेत्य कृष्णः ॥
जराथ तं देशम् उपाजगाम; लुब्धस् तदानीं मृगलिप्सुर् उग्रः ॥

mene tataḥ saṃkramaṇasya kālaṃ; tataś cakārendriyasaṃnirodham ||
sa saṃniruddhendriyavāṅmanās tu; śiśye mahāyogam upetya kṛṣṇaḥ ||
jarātha taṃ deśam upājagāma; lubdhas tadānīṃ mṛgalipsur ugraḥ ||
When his brother had departed, Vasudeva — knowing all destinies, possessed of divine vision — roamed through the empty forest in reflection, then laid himself upon the earth, supreme in splendor. All had been known to him beforehand: the word Gandhari had once spoken to him, and what Durvasa had said about the body anointed with the remnants of the payasa — all this Krishna recalled. Reflecting on the destruction of the Andhakas and Vrishnis, and on the annihilation of the Kurus, the great one deemed the time of his departure to have come, and performed the restraint of the senses. His senses, speech and mind thus restrained, Krishna lay down, entering the great yoga. Then to that place came Jara the hunter, fierce and eager for game.

The Lord departs not as one overtaken by death, but as one who chooses its hour: He "deemed the time of departure to have come" and Himself entered yoga. The All-knowing recalls both the word of Gandhari and the ancient blessing of Durvasa — the circumstances through which His departure would be clothed; nothing takes Him unawares. This reveals that Krishna's passing is entirely His own free act, merely garbed in external causes. The verse teaches that the Supreme leaves the world not under the compulsion of death but by His own sovereign will, in the hour He chooses and through the yoga He chooses; and that the outward occasions of His departure — the curse, the blessing, the hunter's arrow — are but coverings of His free will, for over the Lord there is neither fate nor death, and His very departing is an act and not a suffering.
